Too Much Tech: A Family Experiment Update

Hey everyone! I hope that your family is doing ok through quarantine! We are holding up, and we are starting to prepare for things to open back up, as our governor is releasing guidelines for the state.  So, we’ve been doing “Tech Free Tuesday’s” for at least a month now and I’m glad to report it’s actually going well (anyone hear the surprise there?)!

If you missed the first post explaining more about Tech Free Tuesdays you can read it here https://typeaeverything.com/too-much-tech/ and then come back to read about the update!

First, I need to explain that we decided to do Tech Free Tuesdays, but we have been doing them on Thursdays…The name just had a better ring to it saying “Tuesday” instead of “Thursday” so the name just stuck! We now call them “Tech Free Tuesdays on Thursdays!” Thursday just ended up working better for our family’s life!

So how have they been going?  They have been going so well that the kids have even prompted us to put our phones away when the day of the week has slipped our minds! Tech Free Tuesday’s (on Thursdays) have allowed us to enjoy more togetherness as a family, hearing about the kid’s days in detail, cooking and being in the kitchen together, and just more time hanging around each other!  The first few weeks we found ourselves completing more structured activities like board games and card games.  The kids have learned to play the card game Bologna (AKA “Bull Shit” we just changed the name before teaching them) and they are asking to play it often. They completed 500 piece puzzles at the kitchen table, we have played music for each other because that was a rule we decided to allow, and we’ve dance and played together while listening.  The kids and I even completed a fun squat challenge “Bring Sally Up” by Moby Flower.  It’s been amazing to see what the kids are interested in doing when TikTok and Instragram aren’t options.

There was one day when school was still in session where our middle daughter needed the computer for school.  She used it at the kitchen table and signed off on her own when she had completed her work. Overall, this is something that we all want to keep doing (kids included).  My husband and I agree that Tuesday (cough *Thursday* cough) is becoming a favorite night of the week!  Here is the link to the squat challenge. This could be completed with kids of all ages!  Has your family started discussing any tech free time? Share with me how it’s going or what might be holding you back!
